Hockey has Heart announces the Charity Face-Off series

“Hockey, and especially youth hockey is made up of a very special group of people.  The hockey community is like one large family, enjoying fun competition, comradery and caring for each other,” says Lucy Oakleaf, President of Hockey has Heart.  Since forming in 2003, the Hockey has Heart organization has raised over $2 million to help over 70 hockey families in times of need.  And what is particularly unique about Hockey has Heart is the fact that 100% of the funds raised goes towards helping the families.  The group is made up entirely of volunteers.

Now, Hockey has Heart has found a way for the local schools to play a bigger part in helping hockey families.  The 2017-2018 Charity Face-Off Series has been formed.  Hockey has Heart has identified some of the largest rivalry games between schools.  These games will be used to provide a great competitive experience for the teams, while raising funds that can be used to help hockey families.

“While you sometimes wonder about the world we are living in, I truly believe that most people have a huge heart and want to help others.” states Oakleaf.  The schools will be raising funds through gate sales, silent auctions and other creative ways for the students to raise money.  All of the proceeds will be given to Hockey has Heart to assist hockey families in times of devastating life challenges in the future.

For this inaugural Charity Face-Off season, fourteen rivalry teams will be facing off.  The series starts off with the women’s competition in a showcase at the Artic Edge:

November 11th at the Artic Edge Showcase

 About Hockey has Heart

Hockey has Heart (HHH) was founded and received 501(c)(3) status in 2003.  It is a small group of volunteers who have either played hockey or have children or relatives that played the game.

All business and fundraising activities, events and communications are managed by volunteers.  HHH does not pay for fundraising, advertising or any other services.  Legal, tax and other services are provided to the foundation by hockey volunteers.

Since 2003, HHH has raised and distributed over $2 million to Michigan hockey families facing life altering challenges.  Most distributions from our general funds are $10,000 or less and usually cover non-reimbursable medical expenses or lost wages due to illness or accident.

We also hold special benefits for families needing greater assistance.  In these cases, our general fund helps defray expenses by covering credit card processing fees, postage and other event charges so that money earmarked for the family is passed through at 100%.  The majority of funds raised comes from donations.  We are an approved United Way charity and receive a small portion of funding from individuals who have selected HHH as their target charity.
